'The Bluegill Infiltration Incident'
Dr. T'rana Jaiun • STARDATE 72118.3
Personal log update, Dr. T'rana Jauin. The last several days have been difficult and worrisome. Being apart from the crew of the Rubins during the crisis Starfleet is now calling the 'Bluegill Infiltration Incident' was the last thing I could have wanted but sustaining an intense cortical injunction in my implanted node wad more debilitating than expected and while my recovery has been quick, treating the injuries of Lt. Biras has taken more effort and have have kept me focused on the stakes at hand. I am thankful that my effort to derive a sonambutril-derived suppressant based on the bluegill's own isoboromine neurotransmitters was successful in providing a means of restoring agency to the parasite's host has shown resounding success but were it not for Lt. Biras's assistance in understanding symbiotic neutral-bonding based on their own Trill anatomy I may not have succeeded before it was too late. I owed it to both Kurin and the Biras symbiont to do my duty and see to their recovery.
While observing and tending to their recovery, I've reflected on the subversive nature of the bluegills' natural abilities and the ease to which they were able to infiltrate and overtake Starfleet operations. It put into perspective my own past interactions with the Borg and their technology. As such during what downtime I've had here I reached out to and collaborated with the Bynar doctoral system known as 111011110 to devise a surgical procedure to remove and replace my original implants while here on Starbase 8. Together we were able to devise a method that I have made extensive holo records of our research and implementation - see jauin-062C-theta-1 through theta-8 - which proved successful. The replacement implants of my own design are functioning optimally and though derived from Borg tech no longer contain any traces of it. I trust these records will prove useful in possible future encounters with the Collective and their drones.
I cannot deny I was deeply relieved upon receiving word from Captain Oklul of the Rubin's success in preventing the hostile takeover efforts of the bluegills though I was not expecting to receive special commendation from Starfleet Command by way of Admiral Shelby. It has been sometime since I had last spoken with her; we have not communicated since my extensive debriefing upon defection to the Federation. Having received work from my integral role in Starfleet's defeat of the bluegills from Captain Oklul she was pleased to relay that Starfleet Command had seen fit to officially grant me the commissioned rank of Commander with full accreditation as a Starfleet officer for my exceptional service. I take some measure of pride in knowing that I've come quite far from the day of being a provisional citizen as it proves I made the correct choice in rejecting the lies I had been fed since my childhood about the nature of the Federation. As well it is a welcome change of pace to have my loyalty and exceptional skill rewarded, something I never experienced in service to the Star Empire.
As I record this log I am awaiting notice from the ship arriving to collect myself and Lt. Biras for transport to Nerendra Station. Lt. Biras is well on their way to fully recovery - though I cannot deny I will be glad to treat them back in the Rubin's medbay when it is finished being repaired as the one here on Starbase 8 is far too disorganized and honestly lacking. What I've been able to accomplish in regards to Lt. Biras's recovery given the limited accommodations and the very disagreeable nature of the tellerite doctor Blaalull should also go into official records. However more than anything I look forward to returning to my duties and reuniting with my crewmates. I would never admit it openly but I have missed them and been concerned with their well-being, qualities they have 'rubbed off on me' as Lt. Commander Childs would say which as a caitian feels like a turn of phrase with unintended implications."
