Orphaned on the Vega Colony by unknown parents, Shena was raised by an older Tellarite engineer named Thurdu living in the colony who treated her like the daughter she could never have. Though a typically rebellious young Orion, she mostly stayed out of serious trouble enough to manage to try out for Starfleet Academy at her mother's insistence that she get out in the galaxy and make something of herself.

Never expecting to graduate, she spent most of her years partying, making friends, and helping people get to where they needed to be in their lives. Shena was expecting to just wind up becoming enlisted personnel at best, but one of her professors realized she had knack for quantum-spatial positioning and astrometrics. Upon graduating and becoming an ensign she was able to get an assingment on the USS Rubins through friends she'd made during her time at the Academy.
